As an economist with thirty-five years of experience, I am shocked and
dismayed by the poor quality of analysis and the disregard for important
factors in the discussion of economic impact in the recently released New
York State draft Supplemental Generic Environmental Impact Statement (SGEIS)
for potential natural gas drilling activities in the Marcellus Shale
formation.

Good evening. My name is Richard Fitzsimmons. I reside in Wyoming County at RR1, Box 38, River Road, Falls, Pennsylvania 18615-9721. I rise this evening to offer comment and concern regarding the proposed discharge of frack wastewater associated with natural gas drilling to the Susquehanna River, and/or its tributaries.

Workers at a steel mill and a power plant were the first to notice something strange about the Monongahela River last summer. The water that U.S. Steel and Allegheny Energy used to power their plants contained so much salty sediment that it was corroding their machinery [1]. Nearby residents saw something odd, too. Dishwashers were malfunctioning, and plates were coming out with spots that couldn’t easily be rinsed off
